Dr. William Lyday

Physicians go back many generations in Dr. Lyday’s family, his great grandfather known as Dr Bill was a general medical doctor in Brevard, NC riding his horse drawn buggy to make home visits throughout western North Carolina. His grandfather Charles Emmit Lyday was
valedictorian of his class at Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons, now known as Emory University. He served in France during WWI and later in private practice as an Ob Gyn in Gastonia, NC. His father a Thoracic Surgeon also served as an Army surgeon following WWII. He practiced for four decades in Charlotte, NC. Trapper John MD from the TV show MASH was based on John Lyday MD a surgeon from NC who also served in the Korean War. So, you could say that the profession of medicine and treating patients is a family affair.

After completing his undergrad degree at the University of Georgia, Dr. Lyday went back to North Carolina for medical school at UNC Chapel Hill with the intention of becoming a surgeon like his dad. But to his surprise, gastroenterology became his passion. His father forgave him. “Seeing medicine and how it was practiced by so many dedicated, hardworking men in my family gave me a strong sense of duty and a desire to maintain their very high standards. In my family, medicine was a profession, not a business.”

Solving problems and discovering underlying processes is what we enjoy doing. If there is a symptom that is recurring or starting to be a problem… we want to know why. The answer may be diet or lifestyle change, a food interaction, gut inflammation, or an underlying illness that needs to be treated. We will use the latest technologies in medicine, genomic science, and nutrition to uncover the cause.

Following his fellowship and residency, he soon found himself back in Georgia, highly interested in all the new technology being introduced in the Atlanta area. Since the early 2000s, Dr. Lyday’s been practicing in the GI field with a focus on nutrition, research, and innovative procedures.

He started GastroATL in 2017 in order to create a practice where the medical team could focus on three things:

  • Being thorough, looking at root causes and underlying factors to uncover the sources of GI issues.
  • Being comprehensive, addressing problems from all angles, including heredity, diet/nutrition, and mental health.
  • Being Collaborative – building teams of experts to provide integrated care.

Dr. Lyday is board certified in Gastroenterology. Over the years, he’s enjoyed many affiliations, including with Atlanta Health Institute, Atlanta Community Clinical Oncology Program, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. He’s currently affiliated with Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital, Northside, and Piedmont Hospitals.

When he’s not working, he enjoys fitness, golfing, and comedy clubs. (Sometimes laughter is the best medicine!)
