More about GI Tests & Imaging
What it is:
A small, camera-equipped capsule you swallow. It takes thousands of images as it moves through your small intestine.
Why it’s done:
To evaluate symptoms like ongoing stomach pain, unexplained bleeding, long-term diarrhea, anemia, or unexplained weight loss.
Pill Cam vs. Colonoscopy:
A Pill Cam looks at the small intestine. A colonoscopy looks at the large intestine. Your doctor will choose based on your symptoms.
Talk to your doctor to see if this test is right for you.
What it is:
A special X-ray where you drink a liquid called barium. It coats your esophagus and stomach so they show up clearly on imaging.
Why it’s done:
To check for trouble swallowing, acid reflux, ulcers, or structural issues in the upper GI tract.
Barium Swallow vs. Endoscopy:
Barium swallow uses X-rays. Endoscopy uses a camera and allows biopsy. Your doctor will choose based on what needs to be evaluated.
What it is:
An imaging test that shows how your rectum and pelvic muscles work during a bowel movement. Contrast material is placed in the rectum for imaging.
Why it’s done:
To assess chronic constipation, incomplete emptying, pelvic floor dysfunction, or prolapse.
Defecography vs. Colonoscopy:
Colonoscopy looks for disease. Defecography shows how the body functions during a bowel movement.
