Step 1: Positioning the Balloon

The beginning of a year-long program to change your life starts with a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that only takes 20 minutes. Dr. Lyday will start with a diagnostic endoscopy to confirm the procedure is safe to perform. Next, we will insert the deflated gastric balloon through your esophagus and into your stomach. Then a syringe or other tool is used to fill the balloon with a sterile saline solution or a gas to about the size of a large orange.

Step 2: Shifting Your Habits

For the next six months, the gastric balloon is inside your stomach. During this time period, you will reduce the amount you eat and in the same process, re-train your brain to better recognize when your stomach is full.

During this time period, please keep open and constant communication with our weight loss and nutrition support team. We are here to help you maximize the benefits of your weight loss balloon. With our team and the gastric balloon working in tandem, our patients typically lose 20 – 50 pounds (sometimes even more).

Step 3: Removing the Balloon

After 6 months, you have now altered the way you eat and improved your nutrition. At this point, Dr. Lyday will remove the weight loss balloon. The non-surgical procedure is very similar to the placement of the balloon and typically only takes around 20 minutes.

Step 4: Continual Support and Coaching

Over the remaining six months of the program, you will work closely with the weight loss and nutrition support team at Gastroenterology Atlanta to follow a personalize diet and exercise regimen. Our experts will create a program that is sustainable and creates a healthy lifestyle for you.

How much weight can I lose with a weight loss balloon program?2019-04-07T05:36:56+00:00

It is essential to understand that the balloon is an instrument to aid weight loss and must be used in combination with diet, exercise, and a behavior modification program. The amount of weight you lose and maintain will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt long-term lifestyle changes. An Orbera® clinical study has shown that weight loss varies from person to person. On average, patients lost 3.1×2 the weight of those that were on a diet and exercise program alone. In the US clinical study patients lost an average of 21.8 lbs.*

What happens if the weight loss balloon leaks or deflates in my stomach?2019-04-07T05:38:16+00:00

Orbera® and Obalon weight loss balloons have been reviewed in over 250 published global clinical papers. A balloon deflation or leak is a very rare event. However, if the balloon should unexpectedly collapse, you may no longer feel full after eating. If you suspect this may be the case, notify Dr.Lyday and the Gastro ATL team immediately. A simple abdominal x-ray can determine whether either has happened. If it has, Dr. Lyday will arrange to remove the deflated balloon.

Will I gain the weight back after removing the weight loss balloon?2019-04-07T05:38:42+00:00

Based on published clinical studies of weight loss balloons providers (Orbera and Obalon), you should be able to maintain weight loss post-removal by staying on track with your prescribed diet and exercise regimen. Sticking to a healthy lifestyle will be key to maintaining your weight loss!

Are gastric balloons safe?2019-04-07T05:39:17+00:00

Gastric balloons have been used in the management of obesity for over 20 years. Over this time, they have progressed in shape, size, and design resulting in a contemporary, durable product, which is now well recognized as a safe weight loss procedure.

What are the possible side effects associated with weight loss balloons?2019-04-07T05:40:07+00:00

It is likely that the existence of the balloon in your stomach will cause nausea or vomiting after placement. In some patients it may last one to two weeks. Dr. Lyday may prescribe medication to help reduce these potential effects. Patients will need to immediately contact Dr. Lyday for any severe or abnormal symptoms.

Do I qualify for a weight loss balloon program?2019-04-07T05:40:33+00:00

To qualify for any of our weight loss balloon programs, you must be an adult, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40, and be willing to participate in a medically administered program.
